Too bad the slight scratchiness in the back of my throat has nothing to do with Fall arriving anytime soon. The dark clouds outside this Starbucks are as empty as the threats of a substitute teacher. If only it would rain; perhaps the heat wouldn't continue to draw out my frustration. I must say, getting students in their air-conditioned cars after school, in the hottest segment of the day, is not a fun picnic. In fact, it's a skin-melting event.
That's right: skin melting. Or is it, liquid foundation melting? It's tough to tell. This is partially owed to the heat and partially because I'm on a mission to use ALL of my make-up before buying anymore. It's been a fun challenge even if it's daunting. Compared to plenty of girls, I have a modest amount of "war paint". Getting up early enough before school has been all I can do to make myself up. It does, to some degree, make me look more professional and less destitute.
Current reasons behind my sometimes haggard look:
1. My car's transmission is near death.
2. My phone got run over in the parking lot.
3. The place I'm supposed to be living in is infested with fleas.
4. The intern I want to work with me this year is due for rejection from the school's administration.
5. I need to pay for and take an online education course to maintain certification.
6. Very, very limited planning time at school.
7. I'm coaching high school cross country (aka - the remnant of the boy's football team and the girl's volleyball team).
8. A friend of mine is no longer a friend of mine.
9. And of course, I miss someone who doesn't miss me.
(All of this with a pay cut: hooray).
Needless to say, make-up can only cover so much. I'll be getting my deep beauty and/or peace treatments from spending time with Jesus. I know that's the Sunday school answer (without ever having been a Sunday school student myself). Harder done that typed, for sure. My head knows that He's the answer, but the USB cord needs to connect to my heart. Loading....
p.s. - Recently, I did a personality test as per request of my administration. Interesting results: apparently I'm doomed to be the fun teacher who cannot control the classroom. While I am a "inspirational visionary" full of flashes of grand ideas, I lack follow through capabilities. Big surprise there to anyone? Didn't think so. Below are a list of pretty accurate findings:
STRENGTHS: creative, inclusive, flexible, fun-loving, adventurous
WEAKNESSES: forgetful (that explains a lot), late (hmmm....), lacks discipline, impulsive
